Undiscoverd Voices... AGAIN!
In December 2015 I was thrilled to find that I had made the grade for the SCBWI Undiscovered Voices competition... AGAIN! A brilliant bi-annual competition that is run by SCBWI and helps fresh, new voices in children’s literature find agents, publishers and ultimately readers.
This time I was on the long list with my historical comedy for 7-9 year old's 'The Lowayman'. Will he stand and deliver or just leave you hanging?

Oxford University Press- Slush Pile Challenge

In March 2014 I won the latest Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators Slush Pile Challenge, with a little help form the world's worst witch cat.
The challenge was to think about a character that would work for the 7-9 year old market and create a character profile. The prize was the fantastic opportunity to spend an afternoon at Oxford University Press with acting Commissioning Editor, Clare Whitston.
You can read just how Manfred and myself got on here.

Undiscovered Voices
In December 2013 I was incredibly proud when my snot fantasy for 7-9 year old's 'Man Up Manfred Cat' was long listed for the SCBWI Undiscovered Voices competition. Unfortunately Manfred didn't quite make the short list but some excellent feedback helped me see where to take him next.
Commonword Children's Diversity Writing Prize
In February 2011 I was invited to take part in a project, supported by Puffin and RCW, aimed at promoting more cultural diversity within children's literature. My mid grade novel 'Sarah's Sari' was born, an exciting 9+ fantasy story set within the the Bengali, White British community I work and live in.
I spent over a year researching, planning, writing and re-writing my manuscript. In February 2012 I submitted it to Commonword and shortly after received the good news that it has made the shortlist of four. It did not go on to be overall winner but I did receive some fantastic feedback from the judges and will be submitting it soon. |
Brit Writers' Awards Unpublished 2011

Receiving my award from Imran Akram CEO of Brit Writers
In September 2011 my picture book text 'Once Upon a Princess... A Very Hairy Beard Did Grow' was shortlisted in the writing for children category of the Brit Writers' Awards Unpublished.
At the October Award ceremony in London I was delighted to win my category and flabbergasted that it beat off the competition to be announced the overall winner for 2011.
